It's a useful analogy. You won't ask a chess program for advice on how to write well. And yet chess programs superior to all human chess players were seen as a milestone in AI. "AI" in the form of ML is more like a steam shovel versus human diggers.

AGI is different. If it is possible to make an AGI on current or near-future hardware, that will be a revolutionary event. But it still won't be a human mind. It will not have human fears, drives, and neuroses. It will be fascinating to meet a non-human intellect.
