What happens if two installs get the same random ID? Doesn't the new user log in as the old one?

Getting the UDID+installID and then saving that into a file/preference would work, or installID and username.

I'm doing this too, and we're using a 128-bit random GUID, which has an unfathomably small chance of being a duplicate.
