Solar water heaters (including evacuated vacuum tube) are great for efficiency, but PV has gotten so cheap and reliable that it's almost never worth a dedicated solar water heater unless you're extremely constrained for space.

PV also (usually) lets you export generation in excess of what you're using, is ~immune to freezing, and can be pretty darned efficient if the PV is driving a heat pump.

Chinese brands have all but caught up, they're within a few percentage points in performance, but 3-4x cheaper.

The additional cost barrier being you can't self install or Mitsubishi or get any warranty on a self install, which means you'll likely pay 5-10x when you include install.

Unless there is some space/weight constraint, adding additional battery capacity for idle draw and running an inverter is likely less expensive than trying to find 12v only equipment.

Space for panels is very constrained, they already get in the way more than I'd like.

I'll probably expand the battery bank at some point, but that only averages energy over a wider time period rather than increasing the total available.

I've spent very little on 12V equipment - my router and laptop are easily run off DC-DC supplies and USB supplies/lighting/water pumps/radios etc. are widely available. The only thing that's powered full-time and would have been significantly more expensive at 12V is the fridge, and I got that for free with an easily-replaced failed thermostat.

Doubling my present battery capacity would definitely cost more than I've spent on everything else.


Datastar relies way to much on IDs everywhere that it's not ergonomic and turns into a chore. It's also a bit too complicated for its own good trying to solve everything.

As far as I understand D* only uses id (which is a pretty normal HTML attribute?) to key morphs in SSE. I only use one id for fat morphs on the body, and even if I needed more I'm not sure I'd find that any less ergonomic than other web standard attributes (class for example I have to use religiously in my day job with tailwind, etc).

Can you elaborate on the "too complicated" part? It seems a lot simpler to me given the slim surface area of the APIs?


Supercars aren't the excessively noisy ones. Those are the modified cars. Many have quiet modes that run off battery so you don't wake up your neighbors.

IMHO, pollution is way worse.

I'd rather a tax on gas so high that commuter ICE cars don't exist anymore. Let the enthusiasts who actually enjoy driving burn gas.

True. Depending on how heavily they compressed it to fit between those studs it will likely be less than R13. No matter whether you use fiberglass or rockwool, you should make sure you buy insulation sized to the depth of the cavity it will insulate. Then use an insulation knife to cut in for obstacles within the cavities.
